The Ocean Allies: Navigating Change Report

The Ocean Allies: Navigating Change report examines the current state of diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) in Canada’s ocean sector. It explores key challenges and an initial set of recommendations for action that ocean sector organizations can take to integrate DE&I into their workplaces. The report was developed with input from a range of industry stakeholders, along with accompanying ocean labour force data. This is the first stage of the Ocean Allies pilot project that is addressing a core objective of Canada’s Ocean Supercluster: to strengthen Canada’s ocean sector capacity by fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce.

Nova Scotia Business Inc. Sector Report

As the business development agency for Nova Scotia, partnerships are key to achieving goals such as inclusive economic growth. This includes clients and partners at home and beyond in high potential industry clusters – such as the ocean sector. For the Ocean Allies project, NSBI’s role was to compile statistics on the participation of underrepresented groups in the ocean sector’s labour force. The resulting report provides a high-level analysis of labour force statistics for women, Aboriginal/Indigenous Peoples, Persons with Disabilities, Immigrants and Visible Minorities. It focuses primarily on Nova Scotia; however, broader geographic information was included where possible. Its purpose was to provide an overview of what labour force statistics currently exist in order to identify gaps and areas for further research.
